Alabama Scottish Rite Learning Centers

Helping struggling readers is the primary function of the Alabama Scottish Rite Foundation.  We accomplish this purpose by providing assistance to Alabama's schools and teachers.  We began providing reading assistance, at no cost, to children at the University of Montevallo almost 30 years ago with the establishment of the Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders.  In 2001, we retained the services of Dr. Denise Gibbs, former professor and Director of the Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders, and established the Alabama Scottish Rite Foundation Learning Centers.  Through the Learning Centers, we provide professional development for teachers in Alabama schools. Our professional development workshops target identification and intervention for severely struggling or dyslexic readers and the three tier model of reading instruction.  We encourage the use of dyslexia intervention as a pre-referral intervention strategy. This effectively reduces referrals to special education for students with reading problems.

We also make available to Alabama schools the Texas Scottish Rite Dyslexia Training Program and Texas Scottish Rite Literacy Program.  Following provision of this training, should an Alabama school system wish to use these research-based materials with struggling readers, we will provide them with one set of the DVDs for each at no cost.  The National Reading Panel confirms that the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Program is extremely effective and backed by exemplary research.
